Sounds of Majesty

Sunday, November 1, 2026 - 4:00 pm

The season starts off with Anton Bruckner's Mass in F minor, largely considered to be one of the most important settings of the Mass of the 19th century. A challenging work, it is known as a "visionary" piece. Bruckner is well known for his ceaseless editing. The vocal parts of the piece were mostly completed in 1868 or 1869, its premiere performance was in 1872, but he didn't complete his edits of the orchestration until 1893. History tells us that, at the 1893 performance of the Mass, Johannes Brahms applauded so enthusiastically that Bruckner personally thanked him. What an honour that must have been. Please join us at St. James Anglican Church at 58 Peter St. North in Orillia.

Messiah

Saturday, November 28, 2026 - 7:30 pm

George Frederik Handel's Messiah is as much a part of the Christmas season as the lights that decorate our homes and streets, the gathering of loved ones, and the warm feelings in our hearts. Cellar Singers is thrilled to be singing this oratorio once again, this time with special guests, local students who have benefited from workshops facilitated by our Director, Mitchell Pady, and Collaborative Pianist, Ernesto DeLuca.

This concert will be presented at St. James Anglican Church in Orillia.  Take a break from this busy time of year to reflect on the true meaning of the season.

From Darkness to Light

Sunday, March 7, 2027 - 4:00 pm

The third concert of the Cellar Singer's season will include Eleanor Daley's Requiem as well as Ruth Watson Henderson's composition "From Darkness to Light", two strong choral works by amazing Canadian composers. Daley's Requiem, sung a cappella is one of her best known works. The piece includes traditional Latin Requiem Mass text, as well as English language poetry, including the familiar poem by Mary Elizabeth Frye "Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep". Watson's piece is similar in that it is comprised of Biblical passages and the poetry of Wilfred Watson (also Canadian, no relation). These two works  are deeply reflective and moving.

Selections from the Cellar:
Chorister's Choice
Sunday May 15, 2027 - 4:00 pm

St. James Anglican Church in Orillia - The Cellar Singers do not have a physical cellar anymore. What they do have is a vast library of music that many choir members have sung numerous times. Every single chorister has a piece that speaks to their heart; the melody they hum softly when the mind is idle, the anthem that bursts forth when the heart is full, or the comforting harmony that lifts the soul when it is weighed down. Artistic Director Mitchell Pady asked the choir to suggest pieces for the final concert of the year, songs that define why they sing, why they come back, rehearsal after rehearsal.  Using these suggestions, he's put together a brilliant program of choral music to close out our 2026 – 2027 Season. Because every single piece has been chosen by someone who loves it, you will experience a performance filled with joy, energy and vulnerability.
