About Us

History

The Cellar Singers began in 1968 as a small group of choral music lovers rehearsing in the basement of Dr. William Monk’s home in Bracebridge, Ontario, hence the name. On Dr. Monk’s retirement in 1977, Albert Greer, renowned choral conductor, teacher and tenor soloist, became Artistic Director.

The Cellar Singers is now a regional choir, with choristers from the entire Huronia-Muskoka area. They were finalists in the CBC International Choral Competition in 1990 and 1992 and were invited to perform in the Elora Festival in 1992. They also participated in the Toronto International Choral Festival in 1989 and 1993 and at the Guelph Spring Festival conducted by Sir David Willcocks in 1999. In both 1998 and 1999 they participated in the Muskoka Lakes Festival. On Canada Day weekend, 1997, the Cellar Singers sang two concerts in Ottawa and appeared on the special CBC television extravaganza from Parliament Hill.

Several contemporary works have been commissioned by the choir from Canadian composers including Derek Holman, Ben Bolden, Peter Tiefenbach and Ruth Watson Henderson.
